orthern Macedonia is a small country surrounded by Greece, Albania, Kosovo, Serbia and Bulgaria. It has a Greek, Roman and Ottoman cultural and historical heritage to say YOUNG. This Mediterranean country in the Balkans has a fascinating past and a complex national identity.
At the time of Yugoslavia, the mountainous country was best known for the city of Ohrid and the lake of the same name on the border with Albania. Still Ohrid is a treasure trove of Byzantine art and the lake a great stop for all kinds of outdoor activities.

'Thanks' to the communist era, the fantastic mountain areas are still untouched by tourism and the old villages have not yet been 'taken over' by city dwellers with second homes. Because it's such a small country, in northern Macedonia you can start the day with a mountain hike, stroll around an atmospheric town full of Byzantine splendor in the afternoon, and sit on the beach at sunset or swim in the lake.
